Shotokan Karate

History of Shotokan Karate
Shotokan Karate is a synthesis of the major Okinawan Karate methods creating a total discipline and was brought to mainland Japan in 1916 by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Today around the world, Master Funakoshi is widely considered to be the “Father of modern Karate”. Karate was modified and transformed into a way of life by Master Funakoshi. Until this transformation, Karate was just a group of techniques that permitted self-defense without weapons.

Karate teaches through its practices, first self-defense techniques where no weapons are needed other than hands, feet or other parts of the body. And second, the importance of removing selfish and evil thoughts to maintain a clear mind and conscience, together with the ability to be inwardly humble and outwardly gentle. In total Karate-do and Karate-Budo develop the inner qualities of the human being with strenuous training in the way (do) of martial arts.
